DECLARATION OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR VALLEY CHARACTER (GRVCC):
We the following members of the communities of Botetourt County, Craig County,
Franklin County, Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Salem, and Vinton declare our
support for the Greater Roanoke Valley Character Coalition and the continued
development of a higher level of character.
We believe that character development begins with the family and is further
enhanced through the efforts of the church community, the schools, youth serving
organizations and the entire community.
Our state legislators have deemed this subject to be of such importance that
Virginia Law now requires all schools to teach character education. Deliberate
efforts toward character development will help our children learn how to be
responsible members of our community and further create a safer environment for
all of us to live. This legislation specifically cites Trustworthiness, Respect,
Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. These core ethical values
transcend cultural, religious, and socioeconomic differences.
People do not automatically develop good moral character; therefore, focused and
conscientious efforts must be made to help young people develop the values and
abilities necessary for achieving moral decision-making and conduct. The Greater
Roanoke Valley Character Coalition supports the outstanding efforts of the schools
as they work in harmony with the home and the community to instill strong
character in all of our youth. It is through this collaborative effort that we will all
develop a secure and satisfactory life, for our families, and the community in
which we live.
We hereby endorse the Greater Roanoke Valley Character Coalition and its efforts
to work with the entire community to encourage community service, to improve
neighborhoods and to ease suffering and reduce injustice, while embracing the
lives and strengthening the character of those who render it.
I agree with this declaration and would like my name and title included in support of Valley Character's efforts:
