Valley Character to hold Scholastic Ethics Bowl

A new competition will be coming to area high schools next academic year. Valley Character will be the host of the first annual Scholastic Ethics Bowl in Virginia.

The competition is akin to academic competitions or debate. Teams are presented with ethical dilemmas and have to select a proper course of action, then defend their choice. Opposing teams can agree or disagree. Judges award points and select winners.

The competition is modeled on the Ethics Bowl held each year in Arlington, sponsored by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges. The VFIC gave Valley Character permission to use the competition format.

Preliminary participation was approved by Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County and Botetourt County schools, but each high school will make its own decision about entering a team in the fall.
