A joint proclamation recognizing the period from Mother's Day to Father's Day as Parents' Month in the Roanoke Valley was signed by representatives from each of the local governments in and around the Roanoke Valley in a May 11 ceremony in the Whitman Auditorium on the campus of Virginia Western Community College.
The period from May 14 - June 18 is now known as Parents' Month and is recognized as a time to focus on the difficult task of raising quality young people with high character. Special invitees from area agencies providing support for parents and families were on hand to offer endorsement of the proclamation.
A keynote address by State Sen. John Edwards was followed by the signing fo the proclamation by representatives from Roanoke, Roanoke County, Salem, Vinton and Craig County. Additionally, representatives from TAP, the Council for Community Service, Family Services of the Roanoke Valley, the Roanoke County Prevention Coalition and other agencies were honorary signitories.
